- Black women are 3X as likely to die in childbirth than White women
- Black women are 2X as likely to lose an infant to premature death as White women
- Postpartum depression is 1.6X higher for Black women than White women
- The United States is the only developed country with a rising maternal mortality rate (89% higher in 2021 than in 2018)
Democratic lawmakers are addressing these unacceptable facts.
- In Congress, Reps Alma Adams and Lauren Underwood formed the Black Maternal Health Caucus and to create change through the Momnibus Act
- In New York, Gov Hochul signed the Community Doula Directory, a bill sponsored by NYS Senator Samra Brouk which will ensure that doula care is more accessible to families who need it
- The Biden-Harris administration created a Blueprint For Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis to increase access to high quality maternal healthcare
