FACT!

Black Maternal Health Week is April 11-17. In the US, Black women face higher risks than White women during and after pregnancy.

  • Black women are 3X as likely to die in childbirth than White women
  • Black women are 2X as likely to lose an infant to premature death as White women
  • Postpartum depression is 1.6X higher for Black women than White women
  • The United States is the only developed country with a rising maternal mortality rate (89% higher in 2021 than in 2018)

Democratic lawmakers are addressing these unacceptable facts.

  • In New York, Gov Hochul signed the Community Doula Directory, a bill sponsored by NYS Senator Samra Brouk which will ensure that doula care is more accessible to families who need it
  • The Biden-Harris administration created a Blueprint For Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis to increase access to high quality maternal healthcare
