“The Trump budget is historic. For the first time in recent history, the government would spend a larger share of its annual budget on defense than on domestic programs.” —Steve Rattner
Trump submitted his 2027 budget to Congress on April 3. While Congress is not expected to vote on it until September to avoid a government shutdown in October, the budget is notable because of the massive increase in defense (aka military) spending.
- $1.5 trillion for defense/military spending (44% increase)
- $675 billion for non-defense discretionary spending (10% decrease over base, but 24% decrease over OMB’s estimates to maintain current levels)
- Fails to extend ACA tax credits
- Cuts funding Department of Health and Human Services by 12% (and completely eliminates the Low Income Energy Assistance Program)
- Historic low funding to Departments of Labor, Agriculture, and Education
