Biden-Harris announces the most impactful background checks ruling on gun sales since the Brady Bill passed in 1993.
Timeline:
- June 2022: bipartisan Safer Communities Act passed
- August 2023: Biden signed EO directing the DOJ to clarify the Act in order to get as close to universal background checks as possible without additional legislation
- May 2024: new rule goes into effect
The rule will close the gun show loophole. Anyone who sells guns for a profit will now be required to be a licensed dealer and do a background check, even at gun shows and through online marketplaces. Will affect about 20,000 dealers and tens of thousands of gun sales, and will help to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and felons.
